Maria Leopoldina of Austria, born Archduchess of Austria, was the driving force behind Brazil's independence.
She was the wife of Emperor D. Pedro I and the first Empress of Brazil from 1822 until her death and, for two months, Queen Consort of Portugal and the Algarves.
