João Manuel was the son of King João III and Queen Catherine of Austria and became the Crown Prince of Portugal in 1539.
João Manuel died at only 17 from what was thought to be tuberculosis, but some historians believe that the reason was diabetes, a disease inherited from his maternal grandfather Filipe I. Eighteen days after his death, a posthumous son was born from his marriage to Joan of Austria: the future King Sebastião I of Portugal.
