Dom Henrique I, also known as Henry the Chaste, was King of Portugal from 1578 to 1580. A cardinal by vocation and deeply devoted to the Church, he ascended to the throne after the tragic death of his grand-nephew, King Sebastião I, at the Battle of Alcácer Quibir.

As a religious man who had taken holy vows, his reign was marked by the dilemma of securing a successor while upholding his clerical commitments. Despite being king, Henrique remained loyal to his priestly identity, which earned him the epithet the Chaste.
His short and troubled reign ended with his death in 1580, without naming a clear heir. This led to a succession crisis that eventually resulted in the Iberian Union, when Portugal came under Spanish rule for 60 years.

Though his time on the throne was brief, Dom Henrique I is remembered as a complex and devout figure who ruled during a crucial transitional period in Portuguese history.«
