Dom Sancho I, known as Sancho the Populator, was the second King of Portugal and the son of Dom Afonso Henriques, the first Portuguese monarch. He ascended to the throne in 1185 and reigned until his death in 1211.

Sancho I earned his nickname through his dedication to repopulating and strengthening the newly formed Portuguese kingdom. He focused on the development of towns, granted numerous charters (forais), and supported agriculture and commerce as a way to solidify national identity and prosperity.

Dom Sancho I died in Coimbra, the same city where he was born, leaving behind a legacy of consolidation and growth during the early days of Portugal as a nation.
