Maria Benedita of Bragança

Maria Benedita de Bragança was a Portuguese infanta and the youngest daughter of King José of Portugal. She had a thorough education dedicated to music and painting and founded the Asylum for Military Invalids in Runa. In 1788, she became Princess of Brazil after her father’s death.

Maria Benedita was named in honor of Pope Benedict XIV and a panel made by her and her sister can still be seen in the Estrela Basilica in Lisbon.
