Dom Afonso Henriques

Dom Afonso Henriques, also known as the Conqueror, was the first King of Portugal and the founding figure of the Portuguese nation. Son of Count Henry of Burgundy and Teresa of León, Afonso was born into a politically turbulent period in the Iberian Peninsula.
In 1128, he famously defeated his own mother at the Battle of São Mamede, taking control of the County of Portugal. From there, he pursued independence from the Kingdom of León and led countless military campaigns against the Moors. In 1143, Portugal’s autonomy was recognized, and in 1179, Pope Alexander III formally acknowledged Afonso as King.
During his reign, he expanded Portuguese territory southward, capturing key cities like Santarém and Lisbon, and laid the foundations of the Portuguese kingdom.
He died in 1185 in Coimbra, where he is buried at the Monastery of Santa Cruz. Dom Afonso Henriques is remembered as a determined and visionary leader — the warrior-king who transformed a small county into an independent nation, earning his place as a national hero in Portuguese history.
