Casa de Habsburgo

Modern living room with a minimalistic kitchen and a glass coffee table.

The House of Habsburg, also known in Portugal as the Philippine Dynasty, ruled the country from 1580 to 1640 during a period of Iberian Union. Established when Philip II of Spain became Philip I of Portugal, this dynasty oversaw a complex era in which Portugal retained its legal and administrative identity while being united under the Spanish crown.

Despite challenges and unrest, the Habsburgs presided over a period of economic activity and overseas expansion, particularly in trade and colonial administration, linking Portugal’s fortunes to wider European and global networks.

The legacy of the Casa de Habsburgo is marked by resilience and diplomacy, highlighting a critical chapter in Portuguese history where national identity endured and laid the groundwork for the eventual Restoration of Independence in 1640.
